This guide is intended to help connect personal computers running Windows 10 onto the campus wireless network. This Quicknote is for the benefit of the affiliates and guests of the University of Michigan-Flint. If you are attempting to connect University-owned domain machines, please consult the ITS Helpdesk in either 206 MSB or 3174 WSW for assistance.
To connect to the campus wireless network, you will need to know your UM-Flint email address, (email@example.com) and current account password. The instructions in this guide are designed specifically for Windows 10.
What are all these networks?
- The network (SSID) eduroam is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. This allows students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions to obtain a more secure, faster Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions.
- Setup your Wireless
- This network is designed to automatically configure the wireless settings of personally owned laptops (not phones or tablets) to connect to eduroam. Please do not use this utility if your laptop is owned by the university. If you are having difficulty connecting to eduroam with a university provided laptop please contact the helpdesk.
- Visitors to our campus that do not participate or are unfamiliar with eduroam can gain one day access to Internet Wi-Fi (not local UM-Flint resources such as printers). This is also the connection that devices that cannot support connecting to eduroam will utilize such as gaming consoles (Xbox, Play Stations Wii), video/informational streaming device (Roku, Amazon Echo/DOT/Fire sticks) and Smart TV’s. Connecting to the Wireless Network
To connect your personal laptop to eduroam,
- Click on the Wireless Network Icon: Which will display the available networks.
- Select the eduroam network. Check the checkbox Connect Automatically and select Connect.
- Enter your email firstname.lastname@example.org for the username and current password and select okay
- If prompted Accept the security prompt that displays.

Manually Configuring eduroam on Windows 10
- Press the Windows Start Icon and then select Settings from the menu.
- Open the Network and Internet.
- Open the Network and Sharing Center.
- Click the Set up a new connection or network.
- Select Manually connect to a wireless network from the list and click Next.
- Enter the following settings:
- Network Name: eduroam
- Security Type: WPA2 Enterprise
- If you would like your computer to connect to eduroam whenever available, check the box Start this connection automatically
- Click Next
- Click Change connection settings
- Click the Security tab
- Next to Microsoft Protected EAP, click the Settings button
- Ensure Verify the server’s identity by validating the certificate box is checked
- Check the box Connect to these servers:
- In the textbox below “Connect to these servers”, type pf.umflint.edu
- In the “Trusted Root Certification Authorities:” selection container, check the box Addtrust External CA Root
- In the Notifications before the Connecting drop-down list, select Don’t ask user to authorize new servers or trusted CAs.
- Near the bottom of the window, under Select Authentication Method Click the Configure... button
- From the EAP MSCHAP V2 properties window, uncheck automatically use my windows login name and password
- Click OK
- Just below the dropdown for “Select Authentication Method”, check the box Enable Fast Reconnect.
- Click OK to close the Protected EAP Properties Window
- Near the bottom of the window in the Security tab, Click Advance settings
- Check the box Specify authentication mode
- From the drop-down menu, select User Authentication.
- Click Save Credentials
- In the windows security box, in the username field, type your email@example.com
- In the password field, type your current password
- Click OK to close Advanced settings.
- In the advanced settings box, click OK
