General Email Configuration

Before You Begin

This guide will include all of the information that you will need to connect your device or mail application to your university email account. We are not able to provide exact steps for configuring specific devices due to the vast number of devices that are available in today’s market. Please contact your service provider if you have questions about your device supporting the settings provided below.

Please note: Using IMAP/SMTP is not officially supported by the ITS Helpdesk with the exception of the information provided below. All versions of POP and IMAP have been disabled on the Exchange 2010 server.  The only allowed method of retrieving mail from your university account is Exchange ActiveSync.

Intended Audience

This Quicknote is intended for current faculty, staff, and students who would like to learn about general email configuration for their university accounts.

Requirements

In order to connect your device or mail application to your university email account, you will need your uniqname and LAN password.

The ITS Helpdesk recommends and supports retrieving mail through the following applications:

  • Microsoft Web App (https://email.umflint.edu)
  • Microsoft Outlook Versions:
    • Windows Based:
      • 2010
      • 2013
      • 2016
    • MacOS Based:
      • 2011
      • 2016
  • Mac Mail Client Version 4.4 and Higher

General Email Configuration

  • Account Type
    • When setting up your email, you will need to select one of the following account types, depending on the model of your phone or application:
      • Exchange
      • Corporate
      • Active Sync
      • Mail Option (If you use your phone's basic mail function, please be sure to check with your phone service provider about whether or not your phone supports Exchange Mail connections)
  • Domain
    • Confirm that one of these items are present or enter in one of these items into the Domain field:
      • umflint.edu
      • or FLINT-NT
  • Server
    • Also confirm that the server field is displayed as follows:
      • email.umflint.edu
  • Account
    • uniqname@umflint.edu
  • Password
    • Your LAN password
  • Supported Protocols
    • Exchange
    • SMTP: smtp.umflint.edu Port 587
    • We do not support POP3 and IMAP
  • Also note
    • SSL Connection is required for Email

How to Configure Your Mobile Device Email

  • Android Devices
    1. Tap the Settings Icon
    2. Tap the Accounts Option
    3. Tap Add Accounts
    4. Tap on one of these:
      • Microsoft Exchange
      • Microsoft ActivSync
      • Exchange
      • Corporate
    5. Enter your email address and LAN password.
    6. Your app will now automatically configure the information.
    7. If the app doesn’t automatically configure the settings try entering these when prompted:
      • Domain: umflint.edu
      • Server: email.umflint.edu
      • Account/Username: uniqname@umflint.edu
      • Password: Your LAN password
  • iOS Devices
    1. Tap the Settings Icon
    2. Tap Mail, Contact and calendars
    3. Tap Add Accounts
    4. Tap on Exchange
    5. Enter your email address and LAN password.
    6. Tap on Next
    7. Your app will now automatically configure the information.
    8. If the app doesn’t automatically configure the settings try entering these when prompted:
      • Domain: umflint.edu
      • Server: email.umflint.edu
      • Account/Username: uniqname@umflint.edu
      • Password: Your LAN password
