For anti-virus protection, on personal computers, the University of Michigan currently recommends Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac. Like Windows computers, Macs can also get viruses. Any device connected to the Internet is vulnerable to attack. Windows has more viruses written for it since it currently holds a large majority of the desktop operating system market share. It could also be said that since Mac OSX is based on UNIX that it is more secure, which might be partly true. Books can and have been written about this subject so for the purposes of this Quicknote we won't go into further detail. Just note, due to the increased popularity of Macs, they now have a large enough market share to be a target for malware and viruses. As such, anti-virus software on a Mac is beneficial for protecting your computer and data.
Intended AudienceThis Quicknote is for the benefit of faculty, staff, and students who own Mac computers.
