Frequently Asked Questions:

“I know my files are there, but they’re not being displayed!”

Due to the server configuration, there are times when files in your homepage directory which are moved instead of copied attain a set of permissions which disallow them to be viewed by the general public. The solution is to copy the files in question to another location, followed by copying them back to their original location. This will cause the server to reset the default permissions (making the file publicly readable once again).

“How do I get a listing of my files in the web browser instead of this 'Forbidden' message?”

Forbidden/permissions issues can stem from either having BOTH a ".htaccess" file and "index.html" in your homepage folder or have no "index.html" file in it.

  • If you have a ".htaccess" file in your homepage folder along with an “index.html" file, delete the ".htaccess" file and you should no longer receive the “Forbidden” error.
  • With no "index.html" file in your homepage folder, accessing your homepage via its link in the Homepage Gallery may state you don't have permissions.

The process is demonstrated below for creating a ".htaccess" file is detailed below. If you continue to receive the “Forbidden” error and have deleted your ".htaccess" file, as well as have an "index.html" file in your homepage folder, then you may have a legitimate permissions problem. Please contact the ITS Helpdesk for further assistance.

“I would like to list the contents of the /test directory in the web browser with a '.htaccess' file”

  1. Using a text editor (Notepad.exe in this example), create the ".htaccess" file as shown below:
  2. When saving the make sure your "File name:" is ".htaccess" and “Save as type:” is "All Files (*.*)". Please remember the location you saved the file to for the next few steps.
  3. Upload the newly created ".htaccess" to the directory you would like to have listings. First, you will need to connect to UM-Flint via a VPN connection. Please see the steps listed above for accessing your (H:) drive and homepage.
  4. That’s it! In your web browser, navigate back to the location in question. You should now see a listing of your files, instead of the “Forbidden” message.

"I’m not sure how to make a homepage. Can someone in ITS do it for me, or give me lessons on how to make one?"

Unfortunately, no one in ITS can make your homepage for you or train you in webpage design. Fortunately making a webpage has become increasingly easier. There are many free online programs that make web design possible for almost everyone. Do not contact the ITS Helpdesk for assistance with learning how to use these online programs or help in writing your HTML code.

“My homepage listing keeps disappearing from the gallery searches and I have to edit the listing to get it to appear again. Why does this keep happening?”

ITS will mark your listing as inactive if your links to your website or blog are broken. Once your listing is marked as inactive it will not show up in the gallery searches. If your listing keeps disappearing from the gallery make sure all your links are working properly.

“I am having trouble getting images and additional pages to display properly. I have double checked the links, and everything is correct. Why won’t they show up?”

Unfortunately, there is a glitch with the permissions used in your homepage folder. If you move something to your homepage folder, instead of copying/pasting it or creating there in the first place, it may not have the proper permissions set. To correct this problem you can do one of two things.

  1. Create all files directly in your homepage folder, instead of moving them there.
  2. Select the files/images that are causing problems in your homepage move them out of your homepage folder so they are no longer listed.
  3. Replace them in your homepage folder by selecting them in their new location outside of the homepage folder, right-clicking on them and selecting Copy, open your homepage folder again, and Paste the files in your homepage folder.

"I cannot find my homepage folder in my (H:) drive"

Usually, if you cannot find the homepage folder in your (H:) drive it may have been accidentally deleted or moved. If you do not have a homepage folder in your (H:) drive you will have to contact the ITS helpdesk to have the folder recreated by our System Engineers. The folder contains special permissions that allow the content to link to the homepage gallery.
