Changing Your LAN Password

Your LAN password is your Local Area Network password, it is used to access many different resources at the university. Examples include Email, Blackboard, Student Information System, Campus Computers, Papercut Printers, Wireless Access, VPN, and EZ-Proxy.

Intended Audience

This Quicknote is for the benefit of the faculty, staff, and students on campus who would like to change their known LAN Password. If you do not know your LAN Password, please refer to this Quicknote.

Requirements

To follow this Quicknote you will need to have access to the internet. You will also need to have access to your LAN account.

Password Requirements

Your new password must meet the following requirements:

  • Password is case sensitive.
  • Must be at least 8 characters long.
  • Must not repeat any character sequentially more than 3 times.
  • Must not include any of the following values: test password.
  • Must not include part of your name or uniqname.
  • Must have at least three types of the following characters:
  • Uppercase (A-Z)
  • Lowercase (a-z)
  • Number (0-9)
  • Symbol (!, #, $, etc.)

ITS Recommends that you use a password phrase not a single word.
Example: “Passphraseismoresecure” not “Password”

ITS Recommends that you DO NOT use anything that is easily associated with you. 

  • Your Name
  • Your Birthday
  • Social Security Number
  • Current or Former Address
  • Spouse or Child's Name
  • Parents Name
  • Pets Name
The system will not allow commonly used passwords (such as “password” or “thisismypassword”).

Please note: If you type your password incorrectly multiple times, your LAN account will be locked temporarily for security purposes. Please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 810-762-3123 (option 1) for assistance unlocking your account, or wait thirty minutes until the lock has been lifted.

Changing Your LAN Password

There are several ways to change your LAN password. Please review the list below, and choose the one that is appropriate for your situation. 

Option One: Changing Your Password with the Password Change System

Please Note: If you remember your password, and would like to change it, please follow the steps listed below. If you have forgotten your password, please reference our Forgotten Password guide by clicking here, or by choosing "Forgot Password?" on our login screen.

  1. Open up your web browser and navigate to http://password.umflint.edu
  2. Login using your current uniqname and LAN password.
  3. On the menu shown, please click Change Password.
  4. Type in your new LAN password using the provided guidelines. These text fields are interactive and will notify if you have a strong enough password.
  5. Once you have typed a valid password, click the Change Password button below the text areas.
  6. Your password will be updated. This process can take several minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection. Please let the page load during this time.
  7. You should receive a prompt stating that the password has been successfully changed once complete. 

Option Two: Bring Picture ID to the Helpdesk

Please Note: See helpdesk.umflint.edu for the current semester hours.
You are welcome to stop by any of the ITS Helpdesk locations, 3174 WSW or 206 MSB, with a picture ID and we can assist you with changing your password.

Option Three: Changing Your Password via Webmail

Please Note: This method requires that you know your current LAN password, and have access to http://email.umflint.edu within your web browser.

  1. Navigate to https://email.umflint.edu
  2. Login with your uniqname and current LAN password.
  3. Once you are logged in and see your Inbox, please click on the Options button found in the top right corner.
  4. On the sub-menu, please click on Change Your Password.
  5. You will be directed to another page with several text boxes. Type in your Outlook Account information as follows:
    • For Current Password, enter your current LAN password.
    • For New Password, enter your new LAN password.
    • For Confirm New Password, retype your new password.
  6. Click Save.
  7. A box will pop-up notifying you when your password was successfully changed.

Option Four: Changing Your Password via Control-Alt-Delete On University Computers

Please Note: This method can only be done on-campus, or when connected via Pulse Secure on a University owned machine off-campus. This method also requires the knowledge of your previous password. If you are off-campus, you must be connected to the VPN before making the change. 

  1. Once you have logged into the computer, press the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys at the same time
  2. Click the Change Password button in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Type in your LAN account information as follows:
    • Select FLINT-NT in the log on to field.
    • For Previous Password, enter your current LAN password.
    • For New Password, enter your new password.
    • For Confirm New Password, retype your new password.
  4. Click OK. Your password should now be updated!
